Aloha mai kākou,
In recent years, the Mānoa Neighborhood Board No. 7 has received community testimony and concern regarding the Red Hill Fuel Tank Facility. The Board has proactively raised awareness about the risks to Honolulu’s shared aquifer in its meetings, urging strong governmental response.
With continued environmental releases threatening the drinking water of Mānoa Valley, the Board would like to invite the following entities to send its speakers to the Board's next Regular Meeting, planned for January 5, 2022. at 7 p.m., held via WebEx (link and meeting information forthcoming from the City and County of Honolulu):
The United States Congressional Delegation from Hawaiʻi,
the U.S. Department of the Navy,
the Hawaiʻi Department of Health,
the Honolulu Board of Water Supply, and
the Sierra Club of Hawaiʻi.
The invitation is to request authoritative speakers regarding the complex Red Hill incident.
Our former Governor, legislator, and long-time Mānoa resident, Mr. Neil Abercrombie, has joined calls for closure of the Red Hill Fuel Tank Facility. As an esteemed civic leader, the Board proudly welcomes Mr. Abercrombie’s remarks on Red Hill, and remarks from all Mānoa residents. The Board furthermore extends an invitation to surrounding neighborhood boards who share this precious aquifer with us, to convene a joint meeting of neighborhood boards on aquifer-level issues.
During its 2019-2021 term, the Board twice adopted resolutions—unanimously—which urge the Navy’s rapid action to safeguard our drinking water. The documents sanction either corrective tank reconstruction with secondary containment, or else the tanks’ removal, as acceptable remedies. This Board was one of the first neighborhood boards to take up the Red Hill pollution issue and adopt pertinent legislation in the past decade. Those resolutions are attached for media reference.
Lastly, the Board intends to consider new legislation appropriate to the Red Hill incident’s escalated severity and complexity, in its Regular Meeting on January 5, 2022.
